We Are the Smoky Mountain Young Democrats.
We believe in the power of young people to shape the future of Appalachia. Through grassroots organizing, civic education, and community care, the Smoky Mountain Young Democrats (SMYD) is building a movement rooted in hope, justice, and opportunity for all.
SMYD is Tennessee’s first multi-county Democratic committee and Young Democrats chapter, organizing across Blount, Cocke, Hamblen, Jefferson, and Sevier Counties. Our work is grounded in the belief that lasting change starts from the ground up, and that every young person in East Tennessee deserves a voice in the decisions that shape their future.
Guided by our constitution and commitment to collective progress, SMYD exists to:
Build youth power in the Democratic Party and beyond
Elect leaders who will fight for working families, protect our natural environment, and invest in rural communities
Increase voter turnout and civic literacy, especially among young and first-time voters
Speak out against injustice, resist attacks on public goods, and stand with those who have long been excluded from power
Foster a generation of Appalachian changemakers who lead with courage, compassion, and community at the center
We’re not just here for one campaign cycle, we’re in this to build something bigger than ourselves: a more just, connected, and thriving Appalachian future.
SMYD is led by an Executive Committee of young organizers representing our five counties. These leaders support local engagement, help carry out SMYD’s mission, and work to ensure that every corner of our region is heard and represented.
